Training the Whole Horse
There are a lot of buzz words in the horse industry today like Classical Dressage, Natural Horsemanship, and Least Resistance Training. There have been books written singing their praises and bashing them equally. It is hard to know what is right when it comes to horse training. Here at Buzzell Training, we approach every horse with an open mind. We know that the horse is a herd animal whose survival is it's main purpose, but one that has developed a deep bond with it's human caretakers. We believe that, given a fair chance, most horses try to please, and it is usually a failure on the human's part to communicate appropriately when things don't go as planned.
While horses are amazingly intelligent and affectionate animals, they are animals, and we need to be clear and consistent in our communication and fair in our demands. Adopting a system whether Classical or Natural is important. However, we also need to be flexible in our ability to adapt the system when a particular horse doesn't fit a specific profile.
All of our horses are Cross-Trained, another buzz word. We don't hide in the arena, we ride out around the farm and on miles of hilly, shady trails. We go through water and over logs. In the arena we work in hand, on the lunge, and on long lines. Just as the corporate employee today gets bored looking at their cubicle walls, so too does a horse get burned out on arena work. We attempt to keep things fresh with cavalletti work, and low jumping too. The horse is an athlete, and often a valued member of our family. At Buzzell Training we approach the horse in it's entirety Mind, Body and Soul, to achieve a fit, happy, and willing partner whether your goals are Showing or enjoying the Trail.
